History
During the 19th century, Apalachicola was the third-busiest port in the Gulf of Mexico. Today, it accounts for around 1 million pounds of shrimp a year and 90% of Florida’s oysters. The city’s working waterfront is filled with shrimpers, fishermen and oyster harvesters.
Tasty Food
In a place known for its fishing, it is not surprising there are many great seafood options, including multiple fresh seafood markets and oyster bars throughout the city. Shrimp, blue crab and oysters are especially popular.
When to Go
Apalachicola has more sun per year than any Florida city, so it can be a great spot year-round. A variety of events and festivals are held throughout the year. The city holds the annual Florida Seafood Festival in November.
